Sergio Sarmiento, columnist for the Mexican daily Reforma, TV and radio commentator

Sergio Sarmiento is one of Mexico’s most distinguished journalists and editors. He began publishing opinion pieces in magazines and newspapers at age 17, before he received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from York University of Toronto, Canada. At 24 he was appointed editor-in-chief in Latin America of Encyclopaedia Britannica Publishers, Inc. He edited and published the Enciclopedia Hispánica.


Sarmiento’s syndicated column is presently published in more than 20 Mexican newspapers, including Reforma. He is the anchor of La Red de Radio Red, a popular news radio show. He heads the board of editors of TV Azteca, a television network. He is also the president of the proyect “Caminos de Libertad” from Grupo Salinas, and hosts the television shows “La Entrevista con Sarmiento” and “Quinto poder”.. His opinion pieces have been published in The Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times.

Sergio Sarmiento was made chevalier of the Order of Letters and Arts by the French government in 1998. Similarly in 2011 he was invested commander of the Order of Isabella the Catholic form the Spanish government. In 2003 he received the Antena Life Achievement Award of Mexico’s National Chamber of Broadcasters. In 2005 he was chairman of the jury of Mexico’s National Journalism Award. He is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Media Leaders and International Media Council.
