Shannan Adler

Shannan Adler is an award-winning journalist and at Emerson teaches broadcast journalism and interactive media to both graduate and undergraduate students. Her teaching style merges the newsroom with the classroom to provide students with real-world experience so they can walk out the door when they graduate fully able to function in a high-octane newsroom or newspaper. Her classes are known to be lively!

Previously, Shannan worked as a writer and producer for CNN and CNN International in Washington, D.C., as well as a freelance producer for NPR and an international field producer for Operation Smile. Prior to her career in television, Shannan worked as a print reporter for several Washington, D.C.-area newspapers.

Shannan received her Masters in International Affairs from Georgetown University where her thesis focused on Israel's status as a democratic theocracy. She received her undergraduate degree at James Madison University.

Shannan has emerged as one of the leading voices in the country on the topic of native advertising and its implications for both publishers and readers. She offers a unique perspective by being both a working journalist and educator who has worked for both large media companies and small newspapers and is now in the classroom.

Shannan is a frequent speaker on media trends, broadcast journalism and new media platforms. She is a Harvard University media industry panelist and serves as a career coach for students.

Shannan was recently named a Poynter Fellow at Yale University for Fall 2015 where she will lead discussions on controversial media trends.

This Fall Shannan is the host of a weekly news and politics show on PPMTV in New Hampshire which aims to interview every Presidential candidate before the NH primary.

An avid runner and Dachshund-lover, Shannan has found her passion in international reporting. Since joining Emerson her reporting has brought her to Southeast Asia, The Caucasus, The Middle East and South America.

She currently splits her time between Boston, Massachusetts, Rye, New Hampshire and Washington, D.C.
