Shikoh Gitau
A woman in technology, works at the intersection of ICTs, economic development, scaleable business models, private and public sector.
Shikoh has over 10+ years in ICTD technology design and implementation. She currently works for the Africa Development Bank (AfDB), leading the Technology Innovations for Inclusive Growth program.
Prior to working at the AfDB, Shikoh worked with private, non-governmental and governmental institutions globally in innovation in technology including Microsoft, Google and Mercy Corps. She has established expertise in both African and Emerging Markets through specialized interest in issues pertaining to resourcing and transforming poor communities and marginalized groups including women, youth and children.
Shikoh is the founder of Ummeli, a mobile based social network with over 1 million users that connects unemployed youths to employment and skills development opportunities. A pioneer project in the jobs matching space that has been replicated by tens of others.
Shikoh holds a PhD and MSc in Computer Science from the University of Cape Town.
Her recognitions include: a member of the GSMA mWomen steering group, UN-Women, Women in ICTD group, and the Clinton Global Initiative on Women Leading Women in ICT. Shikoh is also recognized as a Top 40 under 40 woman to watch in Kenya 2015, an ASPEN new voices Fellow for 2015. In 2013 she was the recipient of the Anita Borg Change Agent Award, and was on the AfroElle 2013 Power List of African women who affect change, and Huffington Post’s as a technical woman to watch.
