Shinique Smith is a contemporary artist based in Hudson, NY. She is inspired by the vast vocabulary of things we consume and discard. Examining the ways in which these objects resonate on a personal and social scale, Smith pursues the graceful and spiritual qualities of the written word and the everyday. In this new body of work, a free flow between paintings and sculptures ruminates on the interplay of chaos and restraint, balance and connection, and what is revealed and concealed.

Her work has also been exhibited at the Denver Art Museum, The Studio Museum in Harlem, The National Portrait Gallery, DC, The New Museum, Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin, PS1/MoMA, MOCA North Miami, and The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. She has received awards and fellowships from The Joan Mitchell Foundation, The New York Foundation for the Arts, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Smith earned her MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art. Smith is represented by James Cohan Gallery, New York/ Shanghai, Yvon Lambert Gallery, Paris, Brand New Gallery, Milan and David Castillo Gallery,Miami.
