William Hogeland is the author of The Whiskey Rebellion: George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and the Frontier Rebels Who Challenged America's Newfound Sovereignty (Scribner, 2006) and a chapter on early American insurrections in the forthcoming Blackwell's Companion to American Military History. His essays and articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Boston Review, and elsewhere. He is working on a new book about the founding period.
