Here's the Latest on Intranets in the Social Enterprise

Collaboration and communication in large enterprise organizations should be getting easier with mobile, social and the cloud. There's a ton of reasons why it's more critical than ever to get this right.

As the workplace is undergoing a transformation, with millennials targeted to be 75 percent of the workforce by 2015, according to the U.S. Labor Statistics, we're seeing subtle but massive changes. For one thing, BYOD (bring your own device) has created ripples across IT and HR that are just starting to hit critical mass.

What's also happening is that existing tools are failing. Legacy systems, mostly designed for "content sharing" may have been good at the time they were installed, but unfortunately, user adoption has fallen off as these systems are woefully unprepared to adapt to the cloud and mobile.

Finally, many are still using email as the best last resort for collaborative projects, so you can easily see why there is a need to revitalize these efforts.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Rob Arnold, Principal Analyst at Frost and Sullivan on Social Media Radio recently. We talked about their Global Product Leadership award for Enterprise Social Networking that was given to Igloo Software.

Rob talked about how Igloo met the five key performance criteria for the award:

1. Product features and functionality
2. Innovative element(s) of the product
3. Customer acceptance in the market
4. Value-added customizations and enhancements
5. Product quality and fit for different use cases

In addition to better productivity, another huge added benefit to good intranet implementation in the social enterprise is the fact that employees express increased job satisfaction when they have the right tools to do their jobs. This is proving important in employer branding, and makes for a happier workplace!
