In 1941, the painters who would become known as the Abstract Expressionists were working in their studios, forming the artistic identities that would create some of the most significant works of the twentieth century. Seventy years later, their work still captures our imagination. This month New York remains under the spell of the Willem de Kooning retrospective at MoMA and London continues to enjoy Rothko in Britain at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, an exhibition that examines the 1961 Rothko exhibition that mesmerized British art enthusiasts. This week, Denver will become the new home of approximately 2400 works by Clyfford Still, nearly all of the paintings and drawings he created. The Clyfford Still Museum, per the artist's wishes, will be a museum without distractions, no restaurant, gift shop, no theatre -- simply a quiet place to immerse oneself in painting.
