Banda de la Arbol, 2010, gouache on tinted paper, 19" x 24"
This painting-on-paper, from my series Mujeres y Camaradas, shows me and my girls in Frida Kahlo-inspired wardrobe and make-up (including uni-brows and 'staches). I started this project in Mexico City and then continued it on the streets of Los Angeles. The colossal, sculptural roots of this old ficus tree in front of a classic mission revival style house just north of San Vicente in Santa Monica (or Brentwood?) attracted me. The title means "Band [or Gang] of the Tree". I imagine us as well-put-together outlaws, and I see the tree as a fort -- a place to protect and be protected by.
