Formal education is a must in today's world, especially the corporate world. The hiring managers are writing job requirements where these are part of the deciding factor on who gets an interview and who gets recycled without a conversation. We could debate on a separate topic of whether this really allows the best candidate to be chosen. This is one of the, cooperate to graduate circumstances, no pun intended. Depending on which company or industry you are looking to be part of there may be a preference on what College to attend and what degree to receive. Again this in itself can be another in depth conversation. I have personally heard people downplay the College I have received my degrees from in various unrelated conversations. With that said it has never been brought up to me as an issue and has never held me back, having the degree is checking only one of many boxes to be highly successful. To the credit of the Colleges that I attended they are highly regarded institutions and are as certified as the next to deliver education, it was someones personal opinion but it does effect hiring decisions.
This part of your transition is one where you want to start early in identifying which college, which degree and getting started, if not finished prior to transition. Attending College can be very time consuming so you will need the full support of your family in the process to be the best student possible.

Certifications are other aspects that are becoming more and more important in different industries. I can tell you from an information technology industry that there are hundreds of certifications that can be obtained. The first step is to again identify your industry and do some research on what the most likely needed certification is based on the positions you would be applying for. This can be done through looking at a sampling of job reqs on the internet. You want to ensure you have a good focus on which one will provide you the most value as there are so many to choose from.
The use of your GI Bill is an extremely important benefit you never want to leave unused. This will be an investment in your future that can't be replaced. Finding the time and making educational growth a priority is important to your future and the future of your family. You will find it hard to find an employer who offers this level of robust educational benefit. I was lucky enough to be part of a veteran friendly organization that has robust benefits to include tuition reimbursement to extend my educational reach. However I have also been at companies where this wasn't even a passing thought.
Education can come with a hefty price tag but the cost of not pursuing it can be heavier. You will find it harder and harder to find jobs that are not requiring this formal education. This reminds me of a quote by Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders: "Education should be a right, not a privilege. We need a revolution in the way that the United States funds higher education." But until that day arrives take advantage of the benefits you have and set yourself up for success.
