Why We Need to Be 'PC' and Call Out Bigots!

We are not helping bigots promote their cause by calling them out; we are helping defuse it. We are making it known that it's not morally acceptable to say these things. Look at every social justice movement throughout history. We haven't progressed by ignoring hate and staying silent.

It never fails. Whenever we call out someone for bigoted speech, the comment threads fill up with people who claim we are being "too PC" or say that we should just ignore the bigots and not fuel them. Please! While the whole peace-and-love philosophy works to an extent, there is a valid reason that we need to call these people out.

I was recently reminded of this during the Duck Dynasty controversy. People seem to believe that we shouldn't allow words to affect us, or that by publicizing these stories we are somehow giving them more attention and detracting from our progressive goals. I would argue that this couldn't be further from the truth.

Being "PC" works. It has constantly moved us forward throughout history, to bring the bigots to the surface and make them uncomfortable. Sure, perhaps it doesn't stop them from being bigots, but what it does do is make people uncomfortable with remaining bigoted.

When people see that using offensive terminology is unaccepted by the moral majority, it will make people who use hate speech think twice about publicly expressing their hateful views and opinions.

We are not helping bigots promote their cause by calling them out; we are helping defuse it. We are making it known that it's not morally acceptable to say these things. Look at every social justice movement throughout history. We haven't progressed by ignoring hate and staying silent. We've done it by being loud and proud.

So, on that note, let's continue to call out the haters and expose their bigotry!
