The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences expelled Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski for failing to live up to its “ethical standards.”
However, Polanski will keep his Oscar for the 2002 movie "The Pianist."
"I incorrectly played devil’s advocate in the debate for the sake of being provocative," the director says in his apology.
The "Pulp Fiction" director defends Polanski in a resurfaced 2003 interview with Howard Stern.
“Sometimes you just get one wrong — and that’s what happened here," MSNBC President Phil Griffin said.
"It’s strange that this is something we only tolerate in artists.”
Marianne Barnard said the incident occurred on a Malibu beach in 1975.
The request comes after the Academy of Motion Pictures expelled Harvey Weinstein over sexual assault allegations.
