17-Year-Old Questioned In Death Of Woman Pushed Down Fullerton 'L' Steps Over iPhone

17-Year-Old Questioned In Woman's Red Line Station Fall

A 17-year-old South Side boy already in police custody for a separate incident is currently being held and questioned Thursday in connection with the March death of Sally Katona-King, a 68-year-old woman killed after being shoved down the stairs at the CTA Fullerton "L" stop by a previously at-large iPhone thief.

As the Chicago Sun-Times reported, the teenager was arrested and pleaded guilty to charges that he robbed a woman of an iPhone in a similar crime on May 15 near the Clark/Division Red Line stop. He had been given a four-year prison sentence in a juvenile facility in Joliet for that crime.

On March 29, Katona-King, a receptionist at the Evangelical Lutheran Metropolitan Chicago Synod, was reportedly heading up the stairs of the Fullerton "L" station when she encountered a thief making his escape after snatching an iPhone from a Brown Line passenger. The thief knocked her down the stairs and she was pronounced dead of a cerebral hemorrhage the next day. She was also an active volunteer and deacon at Logan Square's First Lutheran Church.

At this time, as the RedEye reported, it is unclear what specific evidence has linked the jailed juvenile charged with the May theft to the incident that resulted in Katona-King's death.
