Displaced Pakistanis Begin Return Home (VIDEO, SLIDESHOW)

The Pakistan army has begun allowing some of the 2 million people displaced by the violence in Swat Valley to return home, the BBC reports.

The first convoy of buses carrying people from temporary camps began its journey on Monday.

The army reopened roads into the troubled district after an offensive to drive out Taliban militants there.

Some have expressed excitement to return home due to the difficult conditions in the displacement camps, while others have been wary to return because of fears of security, BBC reports.

As the displaced return home, though the Pakistani army continues its offensive against Taliban suspects in South Waziristan, Al Jazeera English reports.

Pakistani jets on Sunday pounded several locations in the southwest, along the border with Afghanistan, as part of an ongoing military assault aimed at capturing Baitullah Mehsud, the head of the Pakistani Taliban.

The continued offensive comes in the wake of the military declaring that it had expelled Taliban fighters from the northern regions of Buner, Swat and Lower Dir, paving the way for the return of some of the two million people displaced by the fighting.
