Essential oils are everywhere now and it can quite frankly, be overwhelming. You can buy a kit of oils in just about any size you can imagine. I’m here to tell you that before you invest big bucks in an essential oil kit, step back and think about it. Why?

Most people do not need or will they ever use a large kit of essential oils. One of the wonderful qualities about essential oils is that each oil has a wide variety of uses. So start small, very small.

As an aroma therapist I recommend people starting out with 3 maybe 4 essential oils. Lemon, Lavender, Peppermint and Melaleuca. These four oils should do just about anything you need while you are trying out oils.

· Lemon – Lemon rules when it comes to cleaning. It’s an incredible deodorizer, grease cutter, sticker remover, mold and mildew killer, glass cleaner, air purifier and laundry aid.

· Lavender –this is an all-purpose oil, if I were ever to be stuck on a desert island with only one oil, it would be lavender. It is a great skin oil, cuts, bruises or burns, it calms and relaxes and studies have shown it is a great sleep aid.

· Peppermint – Peppermint is great for helping you “wake up and focus” when you are in the midst of an afternoon slump. It is great for any digestive issue, head tension and reduces your body temperature when you have a hot flash!

· Melaleuca – Melaleuca (Tea Tree Oil/MQV) is known for its cleansing effect on the skin, promotes healthy immune function, and protects against environmental and seasonal threats. I use it in my Boo Boo spray along with lavender as it is a great cleaning agent for the skin.

IS this really all you need to start with? YES! And because you should always dilute your oils before putting them on your skin they should last quite a while!

I put my essential oils in 5 or 10 ml roller bottles along with a carrier oil. They last longer and it is safer and more effective for you.

5ml Roller Bottle – 8-10 drops essential oil MAX

10ml Roller Bottle – 15 -20 drops essential oil MAX

Then top off with a carrier oil. I like to use Sunflower oil but you can use any carrier oil you prefer.

I realize it can be tempting to buy every essential oil that comes out but the fact of the matter is you will most likely end up using the same few oils over and over again.

My advice? Start slow, take your time and really play with just a handful of essential oils and then slowly grow from there. Good Luck!
