Not much has changed when it comes to classroom design compared to a century ago. But given our flat world, isn't it time for the setting to evolve?

This month, SLATE invites the public to rethink classroom design and submit ideas in a competition. Education Writers Association Public Editor Linda Perlstein is leading the crowdsourced project to build a better fifth-grade classroom.

"They can be shovel-ready or fanciful, they can come from elementary schoolers or architects," says Perlstein. "There is no prize, per se, but sponsor Coca-Cola may build a classroom based on the winning entries."

Submit your design by Friday, October 29. In early November, finalists will be posted on the Slate web site during the Winner Selection round and the public will be invited to vote online for their favorite. The winner will be announced mid-November. For 21st century classroom initiative terms and conditions, click here.

Imagine a prize-winning environment that inspires creativity, collaboration, real world skills alongside the rigors of the three Rs. What will it take?
