Cher, the Goddess of Pop who has been entertaining audiences for 50 years, told Maria Shriver on “Today” that she struggles with aging and can’t imagine putting 70 candles on her birthday cake.
“If I put 70 candles on my cake, I would blow my brains out, you know?” said Cher, who turned 70 on May 20.
But her actions belie her words. Her 24-date “Classic Cher” tour is launching in February and she’s returning to the Las Vegas stage.
“I didn’t want to be finished,” Cher told Shriver. “I didn’t want to be through with singing, and I knew that this would probably be the last time. My voice is still really good. I’m still active and running around.”
“I thought that this is probably ... it’s now or never,” she added.
But before she dons one of her work-of-art costumes, she’s going to spend the next two weeks actively campaigning for Hillary Clinton.
Cher has always been politically active. She sent clean drinking water to the residents of Flint, Michigan, and better helmets to U.S. soldiers fighting overseas. She also holds nothing back ― especially her feelings about Donald Trump ― on her Twitter feed, which she generally delivers in all caps.
As far as aging goes, Cher says that she sometimes looks in the mirror and doesn’t recognize the “old lady” staring back at her. Older women face an uphill battle in the job market, acknowledged the entertainer who still fits into her old concert costumes. But her advice resonates: Be a bumper cart, she said. When you hit the wall, you just back up and try again.
