Guernica, Today we face an existential crises in the potential election of Donald Trump whose core beliefs reflect the fascism of the 20th century -- demonizing other races and religions -- viewing brute force as the answer to all problems - and thus endangering our country and the world. My question. Where are the artists, the writers, the performers -- where is our Picasso whose work reveals the horror and the threat that Trump and his cohorts represent? When the fascists bombed Spain Picasso created Guernica. The painting was a response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country village by German and Italian warplanes acting in concert with the Spanish Nationalists. Upon completion, Picasso's mural of Guernica was displayed around the world in a brief tour, becoming famous and widely acclaimed, and believed to have helped bring worldwide attention to the demonic bombing of innocent civilians by the fascist forces. Are the artists waiting for the other shoe to drop? Or for the feckless, gutless commentators on TV to warn the public? Not likely. The election of Trump is as serious for us today as the bombing of Guernica was to the beleaguered people before WW2. If we learn nothing from history it is not just that we are condemned to repeat it -- but we are condemned to live with ourselves knowing that we did not protest and do all we could while there was still time to do so. Even if Trump is defeated he has opened up the polluting stream of fascism in this country -- and it is never too early to counter it. Each of us who recognizes the threat that Trump represents -- in our own way -- must create our own Guernicas.
