A Woman in Comedy: Laughing Through New York and Boston

I hope you will join me on this ride of twists, turns, jumps, dips, and inevitable lady part jokes. Let women reign and the people laugh. Let my people laugh!

I love nothing more than to laugh, especially laugh with my "biddies" (I say this endearingly like-minded friends, old and new). When I learned of the opportunity through my graduate program to work with the Women in Comedy Festival in an administrative sense AND have the opportunity to tune in to some of comedy's best, especially women's comedy's best, nothing sounded more exciting to me. I've been molded by a theatrical upbringing, but never undermined the power of comedic performance. The connection comedy has to an audience is widespread and I am thrilled to be able to cover some of Boston's best.

I have chosen to cover some of the smaller venues in hopes of hearing and finding hidden gems before they are swept up by the fancy (and assumed shiny) comedy gods. I can be found tonight (Thursday) at Grandma's Basement at 1271 Boylston Street (inside the Howard Johnson Hotel) tuning into the official WICF Open Mic Night, hosted by Jean Paul Rivera and Tom Dunlap. Full Chinese menu available! Laughs and crispy dumplings? Why wouldn't I go!

Friday night, I will be running around Boston like a chicken with my head cut off attending two shows in two different locations! (Wooo!) First stop, dirty, dirty Allston's Great Scott for Anderson Comedy: The Gas Standup Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Then catch me on the B Green line train bopping along to the sounds of chaos, laughter and my Ipod while I commute to the second exciting venue, the ImprovBoston studio. There, I will catch the comedic musical stylings of Hannah Gansen, Jen Kwok, and Mindy Raf who will join forces with the stand-up comedy stylings of Janine Brito and Janey Godley in their Stand-Up and Musical Comedy Showcase at 10:30 p.m. My own silent disco will definitely get me in the mood!

Finally, Saturday night, I will be stalking the ImprovBoston premises hoping to catch the Improv and Sketch Showcase at 7 p.m. in the studio, hoping to feed my unhealthy obsession with all things legal (so excited for The Law Firm!) and all things naked (Naked in a Fishbowl, actually about six friends living in NYC).

My last show of the festival will be the Improv, Sketch, and Musical Showcase hosted by Chris Fleming at 9 p.m. on the ImprovBoston mainstage. Do you follow the themes going on here?

I hope you will join me on this ride of twists, turns, jumps, dips, and inevitable lady part jokes. Let women reign and the people laugh. Let my people laugh!
