Ever since you were a kid, cleaning your room was probably just seen as another chore, not something worthwhile. Cleaning up may not be fun or exciting, but a tidy bedroom actually means healthier sleep, making it both rewarding and necessary.
Having a clean room can keep you healthier by ridding your space of dust, bacteria, and other stuff that can infiltrate your sleeping paradise. I've gathered seven tips that you can easily implement into your routine to make sure your bedroom is in tip top shape, ensuring you get the best sleep possible.
1. Get Rid of the Clutter
The first thing to do when trying to make your room cleaner is to get rid of the junk you don't need. Clutter in your room is stressful and can impact how you're sleeping, so move out stuff that isn't necessary for rest. Doing this also allows you to move items out of your bedroom that might have trapped dust or dirt without your knowing.
2. Dust Regularly
Dust mites are a leading cause of indoor allergies and asthma. If you let dust sit inside your room, then you're inviting allergy symptoms to creep in and impact how you're sleeping. Dust hard furniture, windowsills and floorboards, and use a vacuum hose on upholstered items. Try doing this weekly to keep everything tidy.
3. Deep Clean your Carpets
Having wall-to-wall carpet might feel nice and cozy, but carpet also has the ability to trap dust, dirt and other junk. Don't rush out and get a cleaner from the store. Using something like this recipe you can deep clean your carpets and avoid the harsh, store-bought chemicals. Vacuum weekly and deep clean at least every month.
4. Keep Pets Out of Your Room
As cute as they are, pets are full of allergens. From their dander to whatever they track in from outside, pets are another leading cause of allergies and asthma. If possible, keep your pets out of your room and especially don't let them sleep in the bed with you. Get them separate pet beds so you both can sleep well.
5. Use Green or DIY Cleaners and Detergents
Most store-bought cleaners and detergents are a mess of chemicals. Instead of using these, opt for cleaners that you can make at home or those that are made with natural, organic ingredients. This will ensure that harsh odors and chemicals can't make their way into where you lay your head to sleep.
6. Wash Your Sheets Regularly
This may seem like common knowledge, but keeping clean sheets on your bed gets rid of the moisture and skin cells that you shed while you sleep. This will keep your sleep area cleaner and you'll be less likely to sleep in something that you don't want to. Wash sheets and pillowcases weekly. Bonus: Use a healthy mattress protector to keep your bed even cleaner!
7. Get Out of Your Bedroom
Another counterintuitive approach to keeping your bedroom cleaner is cut down foot traffic into your room. You don't have to completely stay out of your bedroom during the day, but instead, avoid sitting or lying down on your bed when you're not sleeping -- especially in shoes or street clothes.
Your brain associates your bed with being tired. If you do other things on it during the day, like reading or playing on your phone, your brain will break this important sleep association. It will be harder for you sleep later.
On top of keeping good sleep quality, doing less in your room will also improve the cleanliness of it. Less foot traffic means fewer opportunities for dirt to be caught in your carpet or dust to be tracked into your bedroom.
Using these seven helpful tips will make your bedroom healthier and more relaxing to sleep in. Keeping your room clean and healthy is one of the simplest ways to promote better rest, without needing to do much else.
