AFI DOCS Schedule Includes 'Letters to Jackie,' 'Caucus' Among 50+ Documentaries

AFI DOCS' 2013 Film Festival Schedule

WASHINGTON -- A documentary featuring celebrities reading some of the nearly 800,000 letters sent to first lady Jacqueline Kennedy after President Kennedy's death will open the 2013 AFI DOCS Film Festival (formerly Silverdocs).

"Letters to Jackie" will serve as the opening film at the Silver Spring, Md.-based festival, which runs June 19 to 23. The 2013 festival expands this year to screen films at both Silver Spring's AFI Silver Theatre and various D.C. locations, including the Newseum, the National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of American History.

Out of 1,929 submissions, 53 films representing 30 countries were chosen for inclusion in the festival. They range from closing night documentary "Caucus," which takes an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the presidential candidates during the lead up to 2012's presidential caucus in Iowa, to gala film "HERBLOCK: The Black & the White," showing a new side of three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Herbert Block of The Washington Post.

Other standouts include the world premiere of Jose Antonio Vargas' "Documented," SeaWorld exposé "Blackfish," "Muscle Shoals" about a small town Southern music studio that recorded some of America's biggest music stars in history and "The Act of Killing," which documents "the complex psychology of Indonesian death squad leaders."

Filmmaker Errol Morris will be honored at the festival's Charles Guggenheim Symposium.
