All That 'Passengers' Criticism Caught Chris Pratt 'Off Guard'

Chris Pratt has finally addressed the mountain of criticism surrounding his sci-fi movie with Jennifer Lawrence, “Passengers.”

Trailers for the movie depicted a story about two people, Jim (Pratt) and Aurora (Lawrence), who wake up 90 years too early while on a spaceship filled with individuals in cryogenic sleep pods off to colonize another planet. Those trailers showed a budding romance between Jim and Aurora, bonded in the fact that they’re alone on a malfunctioning ship.

No one was prepared for the creepy revelation that Jim actually selfishly woke up his female companion after he found himself alone on the spacecraft. Jim chooses to wake up Aurora after watching her pod and obsessing over her.

“Passengers” backlash stemmed primarily from the overwhelming question regarding the morality of Jim’s actions, a question that IGN review says was never addressed. Both critics and moviegoers were less than impressed.

“None of it is very interesting, nor can it get the foul taste out of your mouth about Pratt’s unredeemable character,” Entertainment Weekly wrote.

The movie earned a 31 percent score on the review site Rotten Tomatoes and less than two stars on Roger Ebert.

Now, in a new interview with Variety, Pratt shares his reaction to the backlash.

“I was really caught off guard by that. It was definitely a lesson,” Pratt said.

Pratt doesn’t elaborate on what that lesson might be, but goes on to say that the movie did “just fine” for the studio. The actor wouldn’t talk badly about the critics, instead expressing his personal feelings about “Passengers.”

“I personally think the movie is very good, I’m very proud of it,” he told Variety. “I’ll be curious to see if it holds up — the criticism and the movie.”
