Americans From Across The Country Step Up To Help Abandoned Gulf Pets

People all over the country have opened their homes to the unexpected victims of the oil spill: pets who have been turned in by owners who can no longer afford to take care of them.

Last week, reports about the abandoned Gulf pets roused the sympathy of the American public. Since the story hit the news, there has been an overwhelming response from viewers looking to adopt one of the many puppies and kittens left homeless. According to the Animal Shelter of St. Bernard, dozens of people have been calling in every day looking to adopt, and many who can't adopt are sending money to the shelter and to a brand new program that helps Gulf residents keep their pets.

Find out more about the plight of Gulf pets and how you can help from this NBC Nightly News report.
