André Villers Captures Pablo Picasso Dressed As Popeye (PHOTO)

Groundbreaking Cubist artists... they're just like us?

We are smitten with this 1957 photograph of the one and only Pablo Picasso dressed up as Popeye. The image, taken by André Villers, gives a rare glimpse of the iconic artist as a playful guy with a penchant for giant pipes and fake beards.

Villers met Picasso in 1953 and spent almost ten years observing and photographing his process. He told The Age: "[Picasso] understood I wasn't after his personality or trying to depict something deep … he said, 'If you want to get inside me, then it's best you stay outside.'''

Aside from the charming image of the famous painter playing dress up, we also appreciate the glimpse at his furniture and belongings, especially the Demoiselle-esque masks on the left wall. Inspiration, perhaps?
