Andrew Cuomo Defeats Rob Astorino, Re-Elected To Second Term As New York Governor

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) was re-elected to a second term in office on Tuesday after defeating Republican challenger Rob Astorino.

Cuomo was widely expected to defeat Astorino. Cuomo did, however, face a surprisingly strong challenge in the Democratic primary from Zephyr Teachout, who ran to Cuomo's left and earned 35 percent of the vote. Cuomo also failed to earn the endorsement of The New York Times in the Democratic primary after the paper said that he had failed to follow through on his promise to bring ethics reform to the state legislature. The Times, which also published an investigation claiming that Cuomo's office improperly interfered with a state ethics commission, eventually endorsed the governor in the general election.
