Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, was the target of a stalker who sent her a string of love letters and attempted to break into her home.
The man, who is now being treated in a psychiatric hospital in Germany, twice tried to gain entry to her weekend residence outside Berlin, and once rang the bell of her private flat in the capital, according to reports.
When police arrested him at the weekend outside her country home he said he wanted to know why she had not replied to his letters.
