A Russian military court in Moscow has opened a new trial into the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, an investigative journalist and staunch critic of the Kremlin, who was shot in 2006.

Sergei Khadzhikurbanov and brothers Dzhabrail and Ibragim Makhmudov were acquitted in February of involvement in Politkovskaya's death but the country's supreme court overturned the verdict in June and ordered a retrial.

The three men are all accused of being accessories to the murder but the authorities have still failed to find the gunman or identify who was behind the killing.

Politkovskaya's family and their lawyers have repeatedly called for the entire case to be sent back to the prosecutors' office for a new investigation.
