The Upside Of Anxiety

The Upside Of Anxiety

Sometimes, when you’re feeling anxious, the last thing you need is for people to tell you to “just relax and let it go.” We know it can be easier said then done for most of us. But surprisingly, a little anxiety may not be such a bad thing after all.

Dr. Friedemann Schaub, the author of The Fear & Anxiety Solution, joined HuffPost Live host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani today to discuss how people can make use of their emotional energy in different yet positive ways -- including the anxious types.

“If you are used to using the emotion in a productive way and afterwards you can let it go -- you’re not feeling like your mind is still spinning and you’re not still somewhere in the throngs of anxiety after you met the deadline -- sure, go ahead,” said Dr. Schaub. “There’s no golden standard for how we need to deal with our emotions, and we are actually here to utilize our emotions and not just ignore them.”

Dr. Schaub explains how while there is nothing wrong with capitalizing on positive stress, it’s definitely important to strike a balance.

“We know about positive stress that actually really gets your creative energy going in some ways and certainly lets you have the energy to stay up at night, but there is a finite amount of energy we all have,” he said. “And low and behold, at some point, our nervous system can actually get tired of this kind of behavior and we also don’t feel any longer that we are on top of things, that we can really being control of everything.”
