Stunning Atlantis Space Shuttle Launch PHOTO Offers Unusual View Of Blast Off

Space shuttle launches are spectacular smoke-filled spectacles. They're stunning when seen from earth, but a photo taken from the sky during the final launch of the Atlantis space shuttle offers another jaw-dropping vantage point from which to witness a shuttle's blast off.

Via Discover comes this stunning shot of the Atlantis taking off on its final flight (see picture below).

The photo's caption reads:

Colonel Green is the 333rd Fighter Squadron commander and Captain Bartoe is a 333rd FS weapons system officer. Both aircrew members are assigned to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C. (U.S. Air Force photo/Capt. John Peltier)
