COLD CASE OF THE WEEK
LAPD
Donna Jou, of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., has been missing since June 23, 2007. According to family members, they last saw Jou when she left to attend a house party in Santa Monica. Later that night, she called a friend in San Diego and said a man at the party was bothering her and making her feel uncomfortable. When Jou was reported missing, police looked at the files on her computer and determined she had been corresponding with a man named John Steven Burgess, aka Sinjin Stevens. Burgress is a sex offender who had been convicted of performing a lewd act against a child. Burgress told police Jou died of an accidental drug overdose at a party the night she vanished. He told them he rented a boat and dumped her body far off the southern California shore a day or two after her death. Burgess pleaded guilty in May 2009 to involuntary manslaughter and a misdemeanor count of concealment of an accidental death involving the disappearance of Jou. He served roughly half of his five-year term and was released in December 2011. Authorities have never located Jou's body. Her family has been vocal about their disbelief that Burgress dumped Jou at sea. At the time of her disappearance, Donna Jou was 19 years old, 5 feet 3 inches tall, 110 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Her family has set up a website devoted to the case, which can be found at www.donnajou.com.
