Mike Wallace Dies: Barbara Walters Says 'There Was No Journalist' Like Him (VIDEO)

Barbara Walters grew teary-eyed on Monday's "The View" when she remembered broadcasting legend Mike Wallace, who passed away on Saturday.

News of the trailblazing "60 Minutes" correspondent's death sent a shockwave throughout the media world on Sunday. His passing prompted an immediate outpouring of remembrances from his peers.

Walters paid tribute to Wallace, whom she had called one of her mentors, on Monday.

She was misty-eyed from the outset. "There was no journalist like Mike and I don't think there will be," Walters remarked. She teared up as she continued, calling his questions were "tough," "right on" and "amazing."

She described their relationship as both friends and rivals. "We were very competitive, we were very good friends, but we went after the same people," she remembered. "If Mike got the guest, I was annoyed. If I got the guest, he was — but he was wonderful company, he was very funny."

She said that she had interviewed him in 1984, and he had been planning to interview her before he died. Walters sent her sympathies to Wallace's family and also lamented the passing of other legendary "60 Minutes" journalists.

"He left, Andy left... Don Hewitt left," she said. "These were giants."
