Best Original Song: Oscars Name Adele Among Nominees

The nominees for the 2013 Academy Awards have been announced, with five artists competing for Best Original Song.

Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the nominees early Thursday morning. Adele's "Skyfall" theme earned her a nod. The four songs she is competing with are "Before My Time" from "Chasing Ice," "Everybody Needs A Best Friend," from Ted," "Pi's Lullaby" from "Life of Pi," and "Suddenly" from "Les Miserables."

Noticeably absent from the list is Rick Ross, whose "100 Black Coffins" underscored a poignant moment in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" (no word on whether it also made Daniel Craig cry).

The Best Original Song category was particularly buzzy this year given the number of mainstream artists present on the Academy's 75-track shortlist. Ross and Adele were joined by the likes of Fiona Apple ("Dull Tool," from "This Is 40"), Katy Perry ("Wide Awake," from "Katy Perry: Part of Me") and Matthew McConaughey ("Ladies of Tampa," from "Magic Mike"). Unfortunately the Oscar's don't have room for everyone.

Last year, "Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets" took home this award. That song's music and lyrics are by Bret McKenzie.

The Oscars will take place on Feb. 24, with MacFarlane hosting. Trophies are handed out to those who received the most votes from members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is comprised of working professionals in cinema. It's perhaps worth noting that the Golden Globes -- which take place this Sunday -- are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press.
