Bob Levinson Hostage Video: Former FBI Agent's Family Issues Plea

WATCH: Former FBI Agent Hostage's Family Makes Plea

The family of a former FBI agent who has been held hostage in Iran for years has changed tack, issuing a public plea for Bob Levinson's captors to release him.

The video includes footage the family received in November 2010 purporting show Bob Levinson alive, in which he says he has been held for three and a half years and is running out of diabetes medicine.

In the video, one of Bob Levinson's seven children, David, asks for direct negotiations with the group holding father hostage: "Please tell us your demands so we can work together to bring my father home safely."

The family notes they do not know how to communicate with Bob Levinson's captors except through public video appeals. "We don't know what else to do," his son says.

Bob Levinson was a working as a private investigator -- possibly in connection with a cigarette smuggling case -- in Iran when we went missing 5 years ago.

The United States has treated the situation as a diplomatic issue rather than a hostage standoff, according to the Associated Press.
