Bobby Jenks Arrested: Rex Sox Reliever Busted For DUI

Red Sox Reliever Busted For DUI

Red Sox relief pitcher Bobby Jenks was arrested in Ft. Myers, Fla early Friday morning for DUI, property damage and hit-and-run.

According to the Lee County Sheriff's police report, the 31-year-old was charged with five misdemeanors: three counts of DUI and property damage, one count of DUI alcohol or drugs and one count of leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington told USA Today via text message that the organization is aware of the situation and "gathering information."

Per the police report (via Boston.com), Jenks left a bar and crashed his Mercedes Benz SUV into two vehicles in the parking lot. When police stopped him at 2:35 a.m., he admitted to hitting the other vehicles and failed a sobriety test.

When asked by police about his erratic driving, Jenks explained it by saying, "Because I took too many muscle relaxers."

Despite possessing a potent fastball, Jenks' career got off to a slow start and off-the-field issues, frequently involving alcohol. He eventually reached the majors with Chicago White and was named an All-Star in 2006 and 2007.

In 2010, six weeks after Jenks' fourth child was born, he told Melissa Isaacson of ESPN Chicago (when he was with the White Sox) that he doesn't drink anymore.

"I no longer drink," he said. "No alcohol at all. Not even a beer here or there. Just things like that, really focusing on the future. It was a personal choice. It hadn't gotten too much. I just found myself not wanting to [drink] anymore. I just wanted to be more of a family man."
