Jon Bon Jovi decided to surprise a few thousand people in New Jersey’s Metlife Stadium when he crashed a graduation ceremony on Tuesday.

The New Jersey native brought his band to play onstage during the commencement ceremony honoring Fairleigh Dickinson University’s 2017 graduates. The school had won a contest run by MTV’s college network where students could tweet their best college memories with the hashtag #JBJReunion for a chance to see the star perform at their graduation, according to the Associated Press.

And not only did they get a show, Bon Jovi also offered the new grads some sound life advice.

“Today marks the end of one chapter in your life and the start of another,” he said. “Enjoy the book; you’re the one writing it. Don’t take anything personally. Accept both praise and criticism equally, but take neither to heart. There are many surprises awaiting you on the journey.”

Of course people might have been too shocked to even notice.

And, like anything good in life, there were a lot of bitter people who felt more than a little heartbroken that they missed it.

Bitter feelings aside, congrats to Fairleigh Dickinson’s graduating class. There’s a long road ahead, but hey, you’re halfway there!
