The action picked up three months later on the "Bones" Season 9 premiere, and things were pretty uncomfortable. Brennan was still dealing with Booth turning down her marriage proposal, and she wasn't the only one struggling. Basically, everyone at work was acting super-hostile to Booth, while Brennan was just cold and emotionally confused.
Of course, fans know that Booth only turned her down because "big bad" Pelant gave him an ultimatum. If he accepted Brennan's proposal, than Pelant would kill five innocent people. Instead, Booth was to reject her, and not give her any indication as to why. It looked like this was going to be an incredibly awkward and tense season with the entire cast until closer to the end of the episode.
Brennan tracked down the bar Booth has been frequenting, and there she met one of Booth's old confidantes. While Booth's buddy knew the whole story, he didn't tell Brennan either. Instead he told her to trust Booth. He has a reason for what he's doing. And there's one other thing she can trust. Booth absolutely and undeniably loves her.
And so, in a touching closing scene, Brennan told Booth that she wasn't going to leave him. "I trust you," she said. "I know you love me, and Christine and ... I’m sorry I lost sight of that temporarily.”
One of Booth's fears, though, was that if Pelant saw Brennan less miserable, he would suspect that she knew, and those five innocent lives would be in jeopardy. Was the flashing electronic clock in their home monitoring that scene between the couple? Could this moment lead to big trouble sooner rather than later?
Buddy TV's Kim Stempel is ready for Booth to take Pelant down for good, as he vowed to do this episode. Over at TV Fanatic, though, Miranda Wicker was disappointed with the three-month jump. All of this could have waited. "It would have been far more interesting to pick up immediately where 'Bones' season 8 left off and let us see the messy stuff," she wrote. "Show us this couple fighting to stay together despite the fact that their hearts are both broken. That would make for an interesting multi-episode arc.”
Pelant's threat looms large over Booth and Brennan as "Bones" continues on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
