Bow Wow And Why Fighting Trump With Sexism Ain't The Look

Nobody even asked you to weigh in, Shad.

To Shad “Bow Wow” Moss and every other person in the world who still doesn’t seem to get it: Calling out President Trump doesn’t work when you act just like him. You can’t get back at a misogynistic man by being a misogynist

On Wednesday, President Trump and his surrogates condemned Snoop Dogg over his new music video “Lavender,” which features the rapper aiming a toy gun at the head of a Donald Trump look-a-like.

Trump was not amused by this. He tweeted

Many people came to Snoop Dogg’s defense. Rappers like Common, Ice T and Treach spoke about freedom of speech and artistic expression. Others on Twitter responded to Trump’s tweet by pointing out that, during his presidency, protestors burnt and hung stuffed dummies of Barack Obama, and no jail time occurred:

There were so many valid, snarky ways to defend Snoop Dogg and disprove Trump’s claim. So many ways to debunk Trump without relying on a sexist punchline at a woman’s expense.

And then, there was this tweet from the artist formerly known as Lil’ Bow Wow, which has since been deleted

Just don't, Shad.

Just don't, Shad.

Shad “Bow Wow” Moss, rumored rapper, has a tendency of embarrassing himself on social media. Remember when he said he can’t relate to the Civil Rights movement because he’s “mixed?”

But that isn’t even as embarrassing as trying and failing to clown Donald Trump, Mr. “Grab ‘Em By The Pussy” himself, with one horribly sexist and unnecessary tweet. What does Melania Trump have to do with this situation? Why bring her name into this? Why reinforce every stereotype about black men and particularly rappers by cavalierly bragging about sexually violating a woman you do not know? How is that any better than bragging about grabbing women “by the pussy?”

Melania Trump, though complicit in Trump’s numerous failings, should not be used as a pawn in insulting her husband. No woman should be used to that end. Mrs. Trump has been slut-shamed by liberals who think comparing her past scantily-clad photo shoots to the demure Michelle Obama is an acceptable way to get at Trump. It isn’t. Neither is threatening to “pimp” her out. It’s not funny. It’s not cool. It’s not the sick burn Bow Wow probably thought it was.

Rather, it’s a despicable reminder of the absurdity of sexism, the absurdity of viewing the girlfriends and wives of powerful men as their property and thus, fair game for sexual violation ― hypothetical or otherwise.

And there’s another level of absurdity when it comes to how we talk about any of the women in Trump’s world, from Melania to Omarosa to Ivanka Trump to Betsy Devos to Kellyanne Conway. These women, by all means, need to be called out for their actions. But criticizing Trump doesn’t work if you make overtly sexist comments about his female supporters. There has to be, and there is, a better way.
