'Breaking Amish' Premiere: Four Amish, One Mennonite Leave Their Cultures, Move To New York City (VIDEO)

"Breaking Amish" is a bold new show that follows five young people choosing to leave their Amish -- and in one case Mennonite -- communities and set out into the modern world. While some viewers may be aware of the Amish tradition of Rumspringa -- where Amish teens take a step into the outside world -- this is a different situation that carries different consequences.

For Kate, those consequences were immediate. As soon as her parents found out she'd agreed to do the show, they kicked her out of their home. She wound up living with friends in Florida, and shortly thereafter got into trouble with the law. After blowing double the legal limit for alcohol after getting pulled over, Kate spent a night in jail and had a court date.

But modern court is just of the things she didn't understand, and thus she had no idea she needed a lawyer to represent herself. That's just a hint as to how "fish out of water" this experience can be for these five young adults.

While Kate told the Huffington Post she expects "all the crazy parts" about her experience will make it on the air, she believes those are the most important parts. "They're the parts we learn from," she said. "If we learn from them, maybe the viewers can learn from them, too."
