Tim Tebow cannot seem to catch a break. From not getting the starting quarterback job for the Broncos, to possible third string status, to trade rumors, and now this:
Fans and critics erupted on Tuesday when Yahoo! Sports reported that an anonymous, but "highly knowledgeable member of the organization," said, "If everything was totally equal, and this were a competition based only on performance at this camp, Tebow would probably be the fourth-string guy. I'm telling you, Adam Weber is flat-out better right now."
Then USA Today reported that Boomer Esiason, famed former quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals, threw Tebow under the bus, giving scathing remarks about the young Broncos QB at a CBS press event, "He can't play. He can't throw. I'm not here to insult him. The reality is he was a great college football player, maybe the greatest college football player of his time. But he's not an NFL quarterback right now. What Josh McDaniel saw in him God only knows. Maybe God does know -- because the rest of us don't."
Ouch.
Can anyone stop the bleeding? On Thursday, Broncos Coach John Fox finally stepped forward to defend Tebow and mock the anonymous "highly knowledgeable source" comment, 7News reports. Fox said:
First of all, I would like to say that nobody in this building that is in the decision-making process -- coach, official, or I don't know, maybe they heard it from the cook. I'm not sure, but we hold Tim in high regard. I think he's got a bright future in this game. He's playing maybe the hardest position I know in the NFL there is to play, and maybe in all of sports. He's progressing fine.
The Denver Post reports that Fox also hinted that Tebow is going to get more game time, more than the team's other backup Brady Quinn, in at least one of the two upcoming preseason games. Fox speaking about the playing that each quarterback has had, "Kyle has had 19 passes, Brady's had 30 and Tim's had nine. So in fairness to Tim, we need to get that total up whether that's this week or next."
Perhaps this is the beginning of a Tebow comeback? Or just the beginning of the end? One thing is certain, all eyes will be on Tebow when he takes to the field when the Broncos play the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday night.
