CBS News veteran Byron Pitts will join ABC News, the network announced on Monday.

ABC News chief Ben Sherwood made the announcement in an email to staffers. Pitts will join the network as an anchor and chief national correspondent. He begins in "a few weeks."

Pitts has been with CBS News for more than a decade. He is a correspondent for the "CBS Evening News" and appears regularly on "60 Minutes." He is well-known for his 2009 memoir, in which he detailed how he was illiterate until the age of 12. With Pitts' departure, "60 Minutes" is left with an all-white broadcasting lineup.

"An accomplished reporter and brilliant storyteller, Byron has a unique talent for stories about people and communities facing the longest odds," Sherwood wrote.
