Campaign Volunteers: You're an Inspiration

You are at the epicenter of the political universe. What you're doing isn't just for your state -- it's for an entire nation and, frankly, the future of the world we all live in. The importance of your work cannot be overstated. No pressure.

I want to report to you what I saw this weekend on the ground in the swing state of Virginia. I went there to thank and rally the campaign volunteers and what I saw was incredible.

I canvassed door to door with volunteers and was on the "Gotta Vote" bus with the Virginia party Democratic chairman, Brian Moran, and Justin Long -- the actor from the "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" commercials and "Jeepers Creepers."

Just on Saturday's day of canvassing alone, thousands volunteers walked across the state and knocked on more than 100,000 doors. There were nearly 700 events in held in Virginia alone. There are more than 50 field offices across Virginia.

Thousands of phone bankers made thousands of calls to get out to vote. The people I walked with, the canvassers, had been doing this for months, giving up their evenings and weekends to make a difference.

The volunteers I saw at six different offices and stops across the state were excited, passionate and committed. All of them were energized by Joe Biden's debate performance -- it was a righteous, shot of adrenaline. They were fired up, ready to go!

I'm sure the feeling was the same in Florida, Ohio, Colorado and other battleground states.

So, tonight, I want to honor all of swing state volunteers across the country, but repeating what I told those workers in Virginia:

You are at the epicenter of the political universe. What you're doing isn't just for your state -- it's for an entire nation and, frankly, the future of the world we all live in. The importance of your work cannot be overstated. No pressure.

So, thank you from everyone across the country and in the rest of the states, everyone who's felt the destructive impact of trickle down, laissez-faire, hands-off economic policies, everyone who knows how devastating it would be to drive in reverse.

President Obama saved a million auto industry jobs because he's philosophically opposed to simply watching jobs disappear.

Governor Romney would have let the whole thing go bankrupt, because he's philosophically opposed to intervening in the economy even when people's lives and jobs and entire communities are at stake.

This is what I hope the President reminds us of tonight: 5.2 million jobs created in 31 months, consumer confidence is at the highest it has been in five years. The stock market is at the highest it's been in five years, and foreclosures are at the lowest they've been in five years. The unemployment rate is the lowest it's been since the President took office, there are 500,000 new manufacturing jobs, it's clear: we're on the right track and we're not turning back!

So thank you, volunteers from a grateful nation. You are an inspiration. Only 22 more days. Keep it up.
