Carmelo Anthony Trade Rumors Pick Up After Separate New Jersey Trade

Amid reports that the Denver Nuggets have agreed to trade star forward Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey, team officials in Denver are insisting that no such deal has been reached.

On Tuesday night, several Denver-area media outlets reported that the Nuggets have agreed, in principle, to a deal that would send leading scorer Carmelo Anthony to the New Jersey Nets in exchange for rookie Derrick Favors, the expiring contract of Troy Murphy, and two first-round draft picks.

The report garnered national attention on Tuesday night before Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri quashed the rumors, telling the Denver Post "[n]othing is going on."

Nonetheless, NBA Fanhouse's Sam Amick reports that a three-team trade New Jersey made on Tuesday to acquire more first round draft picks was aimed specifically at collecting assets that could "sweeten the pot" for a potential Anthony deal.

The latest flare-up of rumors comes just a week after ESPN reported that Anthony would only sign a long-term contract extension with the New York Knicks. Anthony, who becomes a free agent at the end of this season, has thus far refused to sign a three-year, $65 million contract extension with the Nuggets. He would need agree to sign an extension with any team to which the Nuggets traded him.
