First 'Chappie' Trailer Shows What Would Happen If Humans Thought Robots Were Cute

'District 9' Director Is Back With A Movie About A Cute Robot

The trailer for the third feature from sci-fi director Neill Blomkamp ("District 9," "Elysium") might be enough to convince you that robots can be cute. That's more or less the premise of "Chappie," which revolves around Dev Patel having created the first cyborg that can think for itself and feel a full range of human emotions. Die Antwoord members Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er (playing themselves, for whatever reason) join Patel in shepherding Chappie's ascent, telling the robot it (he?) can do anything it wants, like paint, write poetry, watch cartoons and "have original ideas." Sharlto Copley voices Chappie, with Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver playing two of the uptight humans who want to terminate this cute little robot's vitality.

"Chappie" opens March 6, 2015.
