Winter X Games Fight Cancer With Annual Charity Event

The eve of the Winter X Games plays host to a different kind of fight -- one that lacks competition, but has a fierce enemy: Cancer.

A joint charity event between the V Foundation for Cancer Research and Boarding for Breast Cancer will bring together athletes and donors Thursday for a night filled with live music and great food during an auction in Aspen, Colo., with all proceeds benefitting the two organizations, ESPN reports.

"We thank Aspen and the entire community for their continuous support," ESPN's Chris Stiepock, vice president of content and sponsorship development, said, "and I can't think of a better way to kick off Winter X Games 2012 than raising money for a great cause."

The V Foundation was started by ESPN in honor of North Carolina State University basketball coach Jimmy Valvano after he was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 46 and died shortly after receiving an ESPY award. The organization focuses on the scientific research associated with finding a cure and has raised more $115 million since 1993 to fund cancer research grants nationwide. To get involved, click here.
