Your Middle-School Breakup As Told By Charlize Theron And Sean Penn

On Friday, Charlize Theron and Sean Penn essentially played out your awkward middle-school breakup on the world stage. You had to hide behind the lockers to dodge that cute guy from Algebra 2; they had to roll out their new movie, "The Last Face," at the Cannes Film Festival.

It's up to you to decide which one is more glamorous.

The former couple played nice and attended a photo call, press conference and a red carpet premiere together. And yet, judging by the photos from the day, their reunion was about as welcome as "The Huntsman: Winter's War" at the box office.

First, Charlize decided not to ghost Penn at the photo call early Friday, but stood about as far away from him as possible in a group shot of the cast.

Next, the cast answered questions from reporters about the film's (to put it gently) lukewarm reception at the festival. To which Penn responded, "I am surrounded at this table by performances that I’d pay to see 100 times.”

Theron, however, didn't appear to share the sentiment.

And to top it all off, the breakup Olympics ended with a painfully uncomfortable hug on the red carpet that you'll tell your grandchildren about one day. Coincidentally, their interaction can also be charted along the five stages of grief.
