Chateau Emanuel, Eagle Rock's Largest Estate, Relisted For $4.45 Million

Eagle Rock's largest estate is on the market again for $4.45 million, less than a year after being listed for $5.99 million.

"The Chateau," as it is called, is set on almost three acres of land. The grounds have three guesthouses, a greenhouse, a croquet court, a football/soccer field, a fully operational restaurant, a picnic park, and an outdoor park. These unusually lavish features come in addition to the extra-large swimming pool, acre of garden paths, a bar, billiards room, and gym.

The 6,000 square-foot main house has four bedrooms and six bathrooms, as well as a dining room that seats 40. The living room, which is flanked by two sitting rooms, has curved windows. The buildings are in a traditional, craftsman-inspired style. The interior decor can look a little stuffy a times -- there is a lot of wall-to-wall carpeting, and the tiles in the billiard room are questionable. Still, no one can deny the allure of the property's ample space and luxurious amenities. It also has a fascinating history.

The Chateau has been the site of numerous weddings and sporting events, as well as a presidential address by Ronald Reagan. According to The Eastsider LA, the house was built in 1925 by Martin Bekins of the Bekins Moving Company. He designed the house for spending his retirement with his wife, but the couple only lived there until his death in 1933.

Oil executive Willfred "Bill" Lane then bought the property, and in 1965, Emanuel and Maria Kvassay moved in. The Kvassays, who had defected from Slovakia, were active in the anti-Soviet movement and hosted figures such as Lech Walesa and Shirley Temple Black at the home, reports LA Digs.
