Cheerleaders Break World Record, Cheer About Science

Talk about bringing it on -- science and cheerleading came together this weekend when Pop Warner and Science Cheerleader combined forces to break the Guinness World Record for "World's Largest Cheer." 1,300 cheerleaders from across the East Coast, ages five to 15 years old, descended on the Sun National Bank Arena in Trenton, New Jersey to set a new world record, beating the 1,200 Chinese cheerleaders who set the record during the 2008 Olympic Games.

Led by the Science Cheerleaders -- current and former NFL and NBA cheerleaders who are now pursuing careers in science and technology -- the girls did a five-minute cheer about the importance of science and engineering. The organization's aim is to challenge stereotypes about cheerleaders (and science, too) and to encourage cheerleaders to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
