Hundreds of people flooded the streets of Boystown and Wrigleyville in Chicago on Thursday evening on the heels of the Supreme Court's historic decision striking down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act.

Almost 500 people took part in a rally and march that launched from the intersection of Roscoe and Halsted, the Windy City Times reports.

While the mood was overwhelmingly celebratory, the Supreme Court news was clearly bittersweet given the Illinois legislature's failure to vote on the state's marriage equality bill last month.

"[W]e are still painfully aware here in Illinois (that we do not have full marriage equality)," Rick Garcia, policy director of the Equal Marriage Ilinois Project, said Thursday according to Patch. "If we want it, we’ve got to do it. We’ve got to hold all (the politicians’) feet to the fire.”

Marriage equality supporters are now organizing another march -- slated for July 13 at 1 p.m. at Michigan Avenue and Congress Parkway -- urging Illinois to legalize same-sex marriage.
