Chicago Winter Weather 2012: First Snow And Ice Factors In Fatal Highway Crash, Road Closures

It was only a light dusting that had all but disappeared by morning, but Chicago saw its first snow of the winter late Monday night.

Some areas of the city like Logan Square had snowflakes, while others, according to the Sun-Times, were blasted with a "wall of sleet."

The below-freezing temperatures and precipitation posed bigger problems for drivers, with slick conditions contributing to one fatal crash on the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway, reports the Tribune.

Following a collision on the Elgin-O'Hare just west of Gary Avenue, a man got out of his car where he was hit by another car and killed, according to the Tribune. There are conflicting reports on the victim's age, though the Tribune says Dhirajial Tejala Ratanpara of Hanover Park, Ill. was 42.

Elsewhere on the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway, along with I-294, Route 53 and Route 59, more than a dozen accidents were reported overnight according to ABC. The highways reportedly had patches of black ice under the light dusting of snow.

ABC says limousines and semi-trucks were sliding sideways in the slick conditions, with 17 crashes total along 294 between Balmoral and Lake Cook Road.

State Troopers were out warning motorists to slow down, with the Daily Herald reporting two state police squad cars were hit by cars sliding on the road.

By 11 p.m. Monday night, the pile of crashes shut down all lanes of the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway between Gary Avenue and Roselle Road. Lanes were re-opened by 1 a.m. Tuesday with no further incidents reported.
