Chief Keef Jail Time Recommended By Prosecutors Over Pitchfork Interview, Rap Rivalry

Prosecutors Push For More Jail Time For Chief Keef

Could aspiring teenage rapper Chief Keef be heading back to jail over a freestyle session he did from a New York City gun range for Pitchfork, the Chicago-based music website?

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Wednesday that Cook County prosecutors recommended Keef, real name: Keith Cozart, be put in juvenile detention for allegedly violating the terms of his probation because he handled a rifle in the Pitchfork feature and did not earn his GED by a previously agreed-upon deadline.

But Judge Carl Anthony Walker said that Keef, 17, "should be placed on electronic home monitoring" though not locked up prior to a Nov. 20 hearing, according to the Sun-Times. The teen is still in the midst of serving his 18-month probation for pointing a gun at a Chicago police officer and is currently living in Los Angeles.

Prosecutors had argued that such a detention would be for Keef's own safety, as the rapper could be targeted due to a rivalry he had with fellow up-and-coming rapper Joseph Coleman, stage name: "Lil JoJo," who was gunned down in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood early last month.

No arrests have been made in Coleman's slaying and police are currently investigating whether there is a link between tweets that Keef posted shortly after the 18-year-old's death and an ongoing feud between rival gangs in the area. Keef claimed that a hacking of his Twitter account was to blame for the public taunts.

Shortly after the controversy erupted, Pitchfork retracted the Keef "Selector" interview and its editor-in-chief said the feature "never should have happened." (While taken off Pitchfork's website, the NSFW video can still be viewed elsewhere.)

Last week, the top aide of influential hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons said that he wanted to speak with the up-and-coming, Interscope-signed rapper and encourage him to be a more positive force.
