Chilean Red Cross Urges Residents To Share Internet, Phones

The Chilean Red Cross has posted a message to its Twitter account, asking those who have power, Internet access and working phone lines to share with their neighbors.

From MSNBC.com:

"Share your Wi-fi with residents for them to inform and communicate," said the Chilean Red Cross on Twitter, the short-messaging blog which has been a key communications link for Chile since the quake struck Saturday.

Chile's communications infrastructure is much more technologically advanced than Haiti's, which suffered a near-total collapse as a result of the Jan. 12 earthquake there.

Though most mobile phones in Chile are still operational, many fixed landlines were damaged by the 8.8 earthquake that struck on Saturday morning, primarily in the Maule region south of Santiago.
